Classification and Evolution

Classification

The system of grouping animals on the basis of their similarities and differences is called classification. The branch of biology which deals with classification is known as Taxonomy(though its deals with nomenclature and identification of organisms too).

Purpose of classification

  • It makes the study of a wide variety of organisms easier.
  • It helps in understanding the evolution organisms.
  • It provides information about the origin and genetic relationship of the being.
  • It supplies a vital information needed by all the branches of Biology.
  • By studying a particular animal or plant or group, classification gives the general information about all the organisms of the group.

Classification on the basic level is of 2 types:

  1. Artificial classification.
  2. Natural classification.

Artificial Classification

  • It was introduced by the early Greeks(Aristotle, Theophrastus) in the medieval times.
  • In this animals are classified on the basis of their habitat.
  • This was the basic concept of classification but did not become the base as it did not reflect the natural relationship of the organisms.
Examples-
Flying animals and insects came in the same group irrespective of the fact that they had different functions and forms.

Natural classification

  • This involves the characterization of the living being into broad groups according to their large no. Of characters.
  • On the basis of certain characters, they were divided into broad groups.
  • And, then other major characters divided them into other sub-groups.
  • This process continued till the smallest unit of classification is reached.
Examples of certain characters are -
  • Cells are Prokaryotic or eukaryotic.
  • The cell is singly occurring or occurs in clusters.
  • Mode of nutrition.
  • Organisation of different body parts.

Classification and Evolution

  • An organism is classified and identified on the basis of their body design in form and functions.(the same is stated in the book "origin of species" by John dalton)

  • But, these body designs do not remain permanent or constant throughout.
  • An organism might have a change in his form or functions due to mutation or any other possible factors in several generations.
  • And, once an organism leads to a single change in his form and function it leads to diversification.
  • The organic Evolution shows that in the current world there are 2 kinds of organisms which exist:

    1. Primitive or Lower organisms -

  • These organisms tend to have same ancient body design and are changed much.
  • They are more relatively simple from the advanced group which are more complex.
  • These organisms, therefore, have more simple body designs.

    2. Advanced or higher organisms -

  • These organisms have acquired their body design recently.
  • These organisms have more complex body design.

Therefore the history of a species is considered as the main criteria for the phylogenetic classification of the organism. (The system of classification of organisms which is based on their evolutionary relationships is called phylogenetic classification.)

Animal and Plant Cells

Cells Cells are the basic functional, biological and structural unit of life. The word cell is a Latin word meaning ‘small room’. Cells are also known as building blocks of life.  The branch of science that deals with the form, structure, and composition of a cell is known as Cytology. All organisms around us are made up of cells. Bacteria, ameba, paramecium, algae, fungi, plants and animals are made up of cells.  Cells together form tissues. And tissue together makes an organ. History Of Cell The cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665. He assembled a simple microscope and observed a very thin slice of cork under his primitive microscope. The cork was obtained from the outer covering of a tree called bark. Robert Hooke observed many little-partitioned boxes or compartments in the cork slice. These boxes appeared like a honey-comb. He termed these boxes as the cell. He also noticed that one box was separated from another by a wa...

Android Versions Named After Sweet

Have you ever thought why are Android versions always named after sweet names ?? Everytime a new Android version is launched its name is kept after a sweet name. Many people have researched about this topic and many have asked Google also. Have you ever tried to find out the core reason behind this? If not then you would find the answer here . First of all let us first see what Google says about this : In 2008 i.e. the year when Android was launched a reporter asked the reason for the same. At that time Google said “It’s kind of like an internal team thing, and we prefer to be a little bit — how should I say — a bit inscrutable in the matter, I’ll say,” said Randall Sarafa, a Google spokesman. “The obvious thing is that, yeah, the Android platform releases, they go by dessert names and by alphabetical order for the most part."

Working of a Car Engine

CAR ENGINE Hi, guys!  You must have thought that how a car engine works. So this is the right article for you. Describing It An engine is described by its structure and the number of the piston it is made up of. For eg: the following engine has v6 90 °. (This is just a part of engine and not the whole)

Paid Apps For Free ??

Everyone wants to play a game like GTA on iPad, it is easy on a computer to download such games but difficult on smart devices like iPad, tablet,  or smartphones. We can buy them but not everyone can buy games. But no worries guys there is a solution to this problem where one can have fun of playing games without spending their precious money .(underlined apps have downloading links  given at the end) iOS There many apps through which you can download these paid games for free. Also, there are many sites for the same. One of the most helpful apps is a Chinese app.It is called haimawan. If on a ios device, then you just have to click install which will redirect to settings  add a profile  and boom enjoy it as you wish . but it does not always work, it might work for few days and then the verification problem which may not cure. One more app is tutu which is a fantastic app and always work (99.9% sure .. nothing is perfect). X cross was the perfect app b...

Important Mathematical Constants!

Important Mathematical Constants Mathematical constants are those numbers that are special and interesting because they come up in the various fields of mathematics like geometry, calculus etc. These mathematical constants are usually named after the person who discovered it and they are represented by a symbol that is usually picked up from the Greek alphabet. Mathematical constants are by definition very important. In this article we will take a look at certain mathematical constants that are more commonplace than others. 1.       π (pi) or Archimedes constant (~3.14159):   π is defined as the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. This is probably the most popular mathematical constant. So π is the circumference of the circle whose diameter is 1 unit. You might have seen it popping up when calculating the area of a circle (πr 2 ) or the circumference of a circle (2πr). It has many uses throughout mathematics from calcula...

Levitation 2

LEVITATION II To be completely honest I was going to start this with a pun. I did think of one but it doesn’t float… I am sorry I just had to. Anyway, this is the second part to the article on super cool ways of making things levitate. Go check the first part out if you haven’t already. Actually, the first part may have become repulsive with all the magnets and stuff, but I promise this will be more attractive. Get it? No? I’ll stop now. I am just going to jump straight into it. 1.    Electrostatic Levitation I know you are probably sick and tired of magnets but they are the best way you know… This method is somewhat similar. You remember that cool science experiment you did with two straws attracting or repulsing each other based on their charge? So basically using the same principle we can make a charged object levitate. But before you try it, let me tell you it won’t be easy. Even impossible according to our Mr. Earnshaw. He even made a law (th...
